Johnson Claims Classic
7/29/2006 Shawn Johnson (Chow's) hit big skills to win the junior all-around title at the U.S. Classic, held Saturday in Kansas City. The U.S. Classic serves as a qualifying competition to the U.S. National Championships, to be held next month in St. Paul, Minn. Johnson, 14, competed a full-twisting double back off balance beam, tumbled a double-twisting double back on floor exercise, and stuck a double-twisting Yurchenko on vault. "I was just trying to make sure I landed it and did it clean," Johnson said of the double-double. "I did so I was really happy with that." (Click here to listen to Johnson talking about her double-double on floor and the competition.) Johnson edged 15-year-old Samanatha Peszek (DeVeau's), who won vault and floor exercise and placed second on balance beam (standing full to back pike). Peszek's coach Peter Zhao, said his pupil will continue to work on all four events for the U.S. Championships. "She did a very good job and she did what she needed to do," Zhao said. "She can do a better vault and higher vault. She won [vault and floor] by a really small margin. These are her specialities and she has more ability." All-around bronze medalist Bianca Flohr (Cincinnati) won uneven bars but fell on floor exercise. Californians Samantha Shapiro and Mattie Larson placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Shapiro earned the highest execution (B) score on uneven bars with a 9.500. Larson, the 2005 Level 10 national champion, fell on vault and balance beam (standing Arabian). The competition concludes Saturday evening with the senior session. |
